Although the Maldives are known the world over for the stunning beaches and azure waters that typify the tropical idyll, its life beneath the water's surface is becoming ever more respected by divers in the know. The Maldives Islands have some excellent coral reefs, but it's the abundance of fish life throughout the country that sets it apart from other dive destinations. Due to the myriad channels and passages between the atolls, the currents sweep and play throughout the island chain so that nutrients are always on the move. Since the islands are scattered over a large area, and some of the best diving is found inside and outside the atolls' lagoons and in the channels in between, the best way to see the region is by liveaboard.
Water temperature in Maldives is an almost uniform 83º F to 85º F (28ºC to 32ºC), making dives at any time a delight. Sea breezes command two distinct seasons in Maldives, which enjoys the luxury of being a year-round dive destination. Southwest winds in May through October bring days of sunny weather, punctuated by brief spells of refreshing rainfall and occasional gusts. From December to April northeast winds herald drier months, when initial gusting winds calm, to bring clear and bright blue skies. November and April, by and large, are inter-season months, when the prevailing wind determines the climate
Visibility in either season is equally spectacular and, depending on current and sea conditions, can exceed 100 feet. With depths of 80 to 60 feet common all year, views of fish life are fabulous regardless of the season. Keep in mind that the winter season in the northeast marks the busiest months in any tropical island paradise. Book early, as our warm sun, clear seas, and amazing dive experiences become the mid-winter fantasy of many tourists from colder climates.
Some resorts have good diving nearby, but if you wish for the greatest diversity and a variety of sites, the liveaboard is King.
